Location Info
Ninde is actually old Dutch for ‘end', because in earlier days Ninde was ‘Werchter ten Eynde' or ‘ten Inde'. You couldn't go any further, the Laak bordered the area. The place name actually makes it clear that the hamlet is located at the farthest corner of Werchter. After all, Ninde was part of Werchter until 1781, together with Tremelo, Kruis, Bollo, Lange Rechten, Veldonk and Geetsvondel. However, Ninde was the most important hamlet, thanks to the quay on the Dijle, which was still navigable at the time. It was even bridged until 1596! Ships from Mechelen and Leuven could be loaded and unloaded there. That brought the necessary prosperity for the residents. The richest part of Ninde was precisely that part around the Amer, where shipping traffic continued. Ninde is now a green oasis where it is good to live, close to the city and yet far enough away to enjoy the peace and quiet of the country life. Ninde is now known for the Psycho-Geriatric Centre and Huize De Veuster. Its most important resident is and remains Father Damien. In Ninde is Damien's birthplace, also the first stone house in the region.
