The Balenberg is an isolated hill in Baal, a sub-municipality of Tremelo. The site is located near the centre of Baal (Tremelo) in a quiet, child-friendly neighbourhood surrounded by greenery. It is a small, yet clear witness hill in the relatively flat surrounding South Kempen landscape. The name "Bael" can already be found in a charter from 1320. Opinions differ on the exact meaning, but they all come down to it having something to do with wood or forest. The hill can be seen as a northern extension of the Hageland hills, just like the Heistse berg and the Beerzelberg. The Balenberg itself consists of two hills, a low and a high one, of which the low is the best known (among other things from the annual GP on New Year's Day) and the high one, which is about 45 metres above sea level. Nowadays the high part of the Balenberg is a nature reserve, this is also where the Baal water tower is located.
